INDICATIONS have emerged that some ladies, including the married ones, have resorted to the use of hard drugs in order to enhance their sexual performance.
The Kano State commander of the National Drugs Law and Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Alhaji Hamza Umar, also raised the alarm over the increased rate of drug abuse among women in the state.
According to him, abuse of drugs, especially cough syrup, was spreading at an alarming rate and was present among both literate and illiterate women, married women and sex workers, whether young or old.
He stated this while speaking with newsmen in Kano, where he noted that NDLEA, Kano State chapter had secured the conviction of 299 male and female suspects, while hard drugs totalling 37,851 kilogrammes had been recovered from suspects from January till date.
Umar stated that the agency was burdened with the issue of drug abuse by women in the North because its mandate does not cover cough syrup, the most commonly used substance by the women.
He added that the abuse of codeine and other drugs like Indian hemp constituted the greatest challenge faced by NDLEA officers operating in Northern Nigeria because the law did not forbid the drugs from being sold or consumed.
The NDLEA boss also disclosed that the practice was witnessing the involvement of more women in drugs, basically cough syrup and off-the-counter drugs like rohypnol, tramadol and others.
“There are 19 females in detention who were arrested in one day for drug abuse. Sadly, there was a 200 level university student among them. I will not deceive the public. It is indeed increasing. We are seeing more women involved in drug abuse. I just sent our operatives into town and within one hour, they rounded up over 100 girls involved in drug abuse.
“To be frank with you, at some areas like Sabongari and other places in Kano, you can find these girls taking drugs as if they are taking normal food. Some of the women arrested by the command even had to breastfeed their children here because they left the children at home,” Umar stated.

A 24-year-old lady, who simply identified herself as Dorcas, and claimed to be from the southern part of the country, told Sunday Tribune that she was introduced to drugs after she joined commercial sex business.
According to her, “I take it every night before I commence the business. It boosts my business and sometimes I make up to N30,000 per night.”
Speaking at the weekend at a press conference at the state headquarters of NDLEA, Alhaji Hamza Umar, said the command, as a result of this historic arrest deemed it necessary to inform the public of its activities from January 2016 till date, a period which featured arrests, seizures, prosecution, counselling and rehabilitation.
According to him, the three young men arrested said the substances were for export to Malaysia via Malam Aminu Kano International Airport. Giving the breakdown of the arrests and seizure of dangerous drugs, Alhaji Umar suspects arrested were 761; with 755 male suspects and 6 female counterparts.
