Carra on Rooney: Other England players should take flak

Jamie Carragher has sympathised with Wayne Rooney after the England skipper was pictured having a drink at a hotel following the 3-0 victory over Scotland last month.

The Manchester United forward came under intense scrutiny from the media when The Sun published pictures of him looking worse for wear after reportedly drinking at a private party at the team hotel, while other players were out in London.

And, although Carragher thinks Rooney should have been more sensible, he reckons that other players in the Three Lions set-up need to be under the spotlight

“I am not advocating drinking until 5am in the morning, but Wayne was not the only one out that night and to be honest, we should be looking at the other players more,” he said.

“Wayne Rooney’s career, while it is not finished, he has everything in the bank. If he never scores another goal, he has had an unbelievable career. These young players are still trying to build that career.

“Wayne Rooney is struggling now because he has played 700 games as a centre-forward. No one in world football has played at the top level longer than him. Have a look at the other ones who were at a nightclub.”
