Katy Perry Cancels Concert in China Due to ‘Family Emergency’ — Read Her Statement
Katy Perry has pulled out of headlining a concert in China due to a family emergency. She was due to perform there on Friday, November 11.
"Regretfully, I must cancel my appearance on the Alibaba Double 11 due to a family emergency," Perry wrote in a statement posted on Weibo on Wednesday, November 9. "I am very sorry to disappoint my fans and look forward to seeing you in China soon."
The "Rise" singer was scheduled to appear along with OneRepublic and Kobe Bryant in honor of Singles Day in China. Singles Day is an online shopping event in China, similar to Black Friday and Cyber Monday in the U.S., and Alibaba is an online payment service. Perry was named its global ambassador last month.
No details about the nature of the emergency were provided by the singer. Us Weekly has reached out to Perry’s rep for comment.
The "Roar" singer has had a big week. On Tuesday night, she was at the Javits Center in New York City in support of defeated presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. Perry, who performed "Rise" during the DNC, also spoke at Clinton's election-night event.
"You know what? We will still all be sitting at the same table for Thanksgiving," she said, explaining that despite her parents voting for Donald Trump, they're all still on the same team. "And this is the moment we need to remember that we all love our parents, and we all love our children, and I can rest easy knowing that both of my young nieces at home will never see themselves less than equal, anything other than equal. So, remember: Today is not just a finish line."
After Trump was elected the 45th president of the United States, Perry took to Twitter. "WE WILL NEVER BE SILENCED. THE REVOLUTION IS COMING. RISE UP. POWER TO THE PEOPLE,” she tweeted. “WE WILL NEVER BE SILENCED. #LOVETRUMPSHATE. Do not sit still. Do not weep. MOVE. We are not a nation that will let HATE lead us. Fight for what is RIGHT."
