Pep Guardiola has poured cold water on reports that Sergio Aguero and Vincent Kompany could be set to leave Manchester City and has again explained their omissions for the game against Barcelona.
Reports were circling on Friday that the duo might not be part of Guardiola’s long-term plans at City after Aguero was left on the bench in their 4-0 Champions League defeat to Barca on Wednesday, while Kompany didn’t make the squad.
Ahead of the Citizens’ Premier League match against Southampton on Sunday, Guardiola quickly moved to dismiss those reports and explain why they were left out on Wednesday night.
“Vincent wasn’t fully fit that’s why we took a decision at Camp Nou. On Sergio, I said after the game it was a tactical decision,” Guardiola told reporters at a press conference on Friday.
“I spoke with Sergio – he was very understanding and helped us from the bench. When Sergio decides to leave it will be his decision.
“What I saw when (Kompany) is fit is he’s a real centre defender. I like him. But we’ve tried to take care of him.”
