World’s top runners to attend Lagos City Marathon – Ambode

At least five of the top ten runners (men and Women) in the world will be part of the 2017 Lagos City Marathon, the Lagos State Governor, Akinwumi Ambode, has assured.
The Governor gave this indication while addressing journalists in his office as preparations for the Lagos race enters another gear.
Presently ranked 2nd in Africa and among the top 100 marathons in the world, the Lagos State Governor said he is keen to see the Lagos City Marathon placed among the top 10 in the world in no distant time.
“In order to achieve the tall standards we have set for ourselves, five of the top ten marathoners in the world will be invited and contract to that effect will be signed this week,” the governor stated.
Organisers of the Lagos City Marathon target 50,000 runners for the second edition which will be held on February 11, 2017.
Following some of the drawbacks in the first edition held earlier in the year, the governor has offered to personally supervise the 2017 marathon.
Mr. Ambode, who promised that logistics will be well-improved upon to see that the 2017 Marathon is a huge success, enjoined all to sign on for the race.
“While world-class facility will be available, we can also use this 2017 Lagos City Marathon as a means of charity to give back to the less-privileged in the society. And charity organisations are urged to take advantage of the opportunity.”
“There will be improved security, live transmission, and a mega-vision will be stationed in strategic places for non-runners to have a view of happenings. Certificate of honour, duly signed by me, will also be issued to all volunteers.”
The winner of the 2017 Lagos City Marathon, according to the governor, would also go home with a cash prize of $50,000, while second and third place winners will smile home with $40,000 and $30,000 respectively.
On his part, Herbert Wigwe, Managing Director of Access Bank, the major partners of the Lagos City Marathon, expressed optimism that the 2017 edition of the race would be bigger and better.
He said Access Bank was glad to partner with Lagos State in showcasing not just the sporting prowess but the vast tourism potentials.
